As moles tunnel through yards looking for food, they leave a subsurface tunnel behind. While walking in these areas you will feel "spongey" or soft spots in the lawn.

Between mounds in cases like this the tunnels are located an inch or two under the soil. Where this occurs the ground feels very soft.
